MODERATE, YET CHALLENGING, TRAIL AND BUSHWHACK UINTA HIKE

 Tuesday, September 15, 8 AM

Meet at Quinn’s Junction Sports Complex parking lot near the restrooms for an on time departure at 8:00 AM.  Alternatively, you can meet us at the trailhead for a hike start at 9 AM. If you need a National Park Pass, please get it before hike day.

This is a 4.5 mile, 4 hour hike, at a moderate pace of 2 mph, or less. Elevation gain is about 450 feet.

We will start at the Fehr Lake Trailhead  – mile marker 30.4 on the  Mirror Lake Highway (Highway 150). The trailhead is on the right before you get to Mirror Lake.

The first part of the hike will be on a gentle trail that leads past three small pristine lakes: the first is Fehr Lake, then we go into Murdock Basin past Shepard, then Hoover Lake.

There is no trail for the second half of the hike. We’ll navigate by GPS, dead (there has to be a better word) reckoning, and luck. We’ll need luck if some space junk happens to slam into the GPS satellites with which we’ll be communicating. In that case, we’ll rely on dead reckoning.

The hike is not strenuous, but we call it challenging because we’ll be going through the forest floor, climbing over rocks and downed trees. Poles might be helpful. Long pants are probably better than shorts. Bug repellent is a good idea. If you’re concerned about ticks, look into Permethrin (even Walmart has it). Spray it on clothing (NOT skin) the day before.

Dogs are welcome but there may be no way to keep track of your dog in the deep woods. Please don’t ask others to wait, if you have to look for your dog. Also, this is black bear territory.

As you probably know, there is no cell coverage in the Uintas.

 Bring the four Hiking Essentials.

All participants must sign the Club’s Activity Release Form which will be provided by the leaders.

This is an RSVP hike. Please email Jon Scarlett if you plan to join us.  scarlet202@comcast.net
