Wednesday July 29 – Moderate Hike – Trail and Bushwhack Unita Hike – Moderate/Challenging
This is a RSVP hike to allow Jon to know how many participants to expect. If you plan to join us, we ask that you let Jon know at least one day ahead of July 29. Send an email to jonjay202@gmail.com saying that you’ll be there.
Meet at Quinn’s Junction Sports Complex parking lot above the restrooms on Wednesday July 29 for an on time 8AM departure .
This is a 4.5 mile, 4 hour hike, moderate pace (2mph or less) hike. Elevation gain is about 45o feet. We will start at the Fehr Lake TH – mile marker 30.4 on the Mirror Lake Highway (highway 150). The TH is on the right before you get to Mirror Lake. The first part of the hike will be on a gentle trail that leads past three small pristine lakes. The first, Fehr, then we go into Murdock Basin past Shepard Lake, then Hoover Lake.
There is no trail for the second half of the hike. We’ll navigate by GPS, dead (there has to be a better word) reckoning, and luck. We’ll need luck if some space junk happens to slam into the GPS satellites we’ll be communicating with. In that case we’ll rely on dead reckoning. If that happens we may not get back until September.
The hike is not strenuous, but I call it challenging because we’ll be going through the forest floor climbing over rocks and downed trees. Poles might be helpful. Long pants are probably better than shorts. Bug repellant is a good idea. If you’re concerned about ticks then look into Permethrin (even ‘Walmart has it). Spray it on clothing (NOT skin) the day before. Dogs welcome – but – there may be no way to track your dog in the deep woods. Please do not ask others to wait if you have to look for your dog. Also, this is black bear territory.
After carpooling arrangements we’ll leave Quinn’s Jct promptly at 8AM. You can meet at the TH. The hike will start promptly at 9AM. If you need a National Park Pass please get it before hike day. As you know there is no cell coverage in the Unitas. Bring the four Hiking Essentials. Bring a snack. Consuming critters you come across is frowned upon. A refreshing surprise awaits at the hike’s end.
All participants are required to sign the Club’s Activity Release Form which will be provided by the hike leader.
If the weather is questionable on the morning of the hike please call Jon, 508-450-1647 before 8AM on the hike day to see if the hike has been cancelled.
