This is an RSVP hike with a cap of 20 participants. Please RSVP to Steve Holmes, hikejuly@gmail.com. If the participant list is full there will be a wait list. If you RSVP and later find out that you cannot participate, please contact Steve so he can open a spot for another member. If you are on the wait list, you will be contacted before the hike if a spot has opened.
Meet at the Mid Mountain trailhead on Marsac Avenue above the Montage for an on time departure of 9:00am. Please arrive a few minutes before 9:00am to sign in. This hike will start at 9:00am.
We are honored to have a guest hike leader. Michael O’Malley, Deer Valley Mountain Host and local author is an expert on Summit County mining history. Along the route through Empire Canyon we will explore the mining history of the area and seek to answer the question of “Who was Lady Morgan?” We will visit the Little Bell, Quincy, Daly West and other mine sites, including the Lady Morgan claim. We will stop for views where Michael will point out areas of mining history significance. He will circulate relevant photos during the hike.
The hike is 3.5-4.0 miles with about 1,000 feet of elevation gain. We will hike at a moderate pace of 2.0-2.5 mph pace. The hike should take 2.5-3.0 hours depending upon the amount of mining history Michael will discuss. This is a hike for Moderate hikers comfortable with the pace and elevation gain.
Unfortunately dogs are not allowed on Deer Valley property. We should have cell service through out the hike. There are no restrooms at the trailhead.
All participants are required to sign the Club’s Activity Release Form which will be provided by Steve Holmes.
Please remember the 4 hiking essentials including good hiking footware, sunscreen, a shade hat and water.
If the weather is questionable on the morning of the hike, please call or text, not email, Steve Holmes to see if the hike has been cancelled.
