Wednesday, September 9 – Moderate Hike – Up the Hoss Trail to the Loopine Trail to the Lackasomethin Trail to Lake Lackawaxen, back by Bloods Lake around a portion of Little Joe’s Trail for lunch and refreshments at the end. 8:30am – 1:00pm.

We will meet 100 yards down Pine Canyon Dr (towards Midway) from the junction of 224, Guardsman’s Pass Rd and Pine Canyon Dr. Look for the old red Expedition. There is plenty of parking along the road. Please be ready for an on time departure at 8:30am.

Our access for this hike and the lunch area has been approved by Utah Open Lands, no matter what old signs say along the trails. This will be a 6.7 mile hike with 1270 feet of elevation gain. Almost all of the elevation gain is in the 3.0 miles ascending to Lake Lackawaxen. We will hike up along the new cut trails and old dirt roads of Bonanza Flats Conservation Area to Lake Lackawaxen. The new trail is very quiet and includes a new 40 yard, small/medium sized boulder scramble quickly followed by a new 15 yard, small/medium sized boulder scramble nearing the top. Neither are difficult. The new trail joins the old trail before the 40 yard, large boulder scramble which is difficult. Kathy will stop in the shade with anyone not wanting to do the last boulder scramble, in and out, while some of us go on to Lake Lackawaxen for a short break. We will then come back down to Bloods Lake and continue down mostly by the way we came up. We will take a section of Little Joe’s trail to the “Veranda Deck” where we will stop for a socially distanced lunch among one of the oldest Aspen stands in Utah. The cars will be close by if you want to leave your lunch in your cooler in your vehicle otherwise have lunch or a snack in your pack. These are well maintained trails with nice panoramic vistas and views. The trails are more exposed than shaded and it is very doubtful that we will come across mountain bikers, probably a better chance for a moose or two. The hike will be at a moderate pace of 2.0 mph and take 3 1/2 hours +/- with stops along the way, especially on the way up. This is a popular trail area so please bring a mask, buff or bandana for the meeting area. We will encounter other hikers once we head to Bloods Lake. If someone wants to join us for lunch that is easy and welcomed. The parking area is an almost flat 100 yard walk to the lunch area. Us hikers will try to be at the deck at noon +/-. For non-hikers please ask us how to approach the lunch deck from the parking area.

Dogs are welcome at Lake Lackawaxen and in Bonanza Flats but they are not allowed at Bloods Lake. Bloods Lake is the drinking water supply for the girl scout camp. We will not stop at but only pass by Bloods Lake. Cell service is spotty. There are no restrooms facilities at the trail head, along the way or at the lunch deck. If the urge occurs, you will use the “facilatree” off of the trail.

Steve and Kathy Holmes will co-lead a moderate hike along the Bonanza Flats Conservation Area to Lake Lackawaxen. There will be a maximum of 16 people split into 2 groups of 8, to facilitate proper social distancing. Therefore this will be a RSVP hike. Send an email including your cell number AND if you will be staying for lunch on the deck to sandkholmes@comcast.net if you wish to join. Steve or Kathy will advise you by return email if you are on the list or if you are on a wait list.

Be sure to bring the club’s Activity Release Form, (COVID-19), which is to be signed on the day of the hike and deposit the form in the box in the back of the Holmes’s car. The form may be found on the club’s web site under the “ABOUT US” tab in the “Forms Section.”

Please remember the 4 hiking essentials including good hiking or trail footwear. Put on sunscreen, a sun hat, bring water, snacks and lunch. Refreshments will be provided on the deck.

If the weather is questionable on the morning of the hike, please contact the co-leaders to see if the hike has been cancelled.
