Wednesday July 15 – Hike and Fish – Pristine Alpine Lake in the High Unitas
On July 15th, we will lead a small group of anglers to a pristine alpine lake in the high Unitas in search of brook trout.
This is a RSVP Event. Due to the delicate nature of the ecosystem and the low-impact ethic of fly fishing, participation is limited to four people, including the leader. RSVP to Andrew Stephens, ahstephens00@gmail.com by July 10.
Meet at the Kamas Food Town, in the parking area in front of the State Liquor Store for an on-time departure of 8:00am. Parking at the trailhead is limited, so we will carpool from Kamas.
The hike is about 2.75 miles each way. It is a moderate climb with a few short, steep, rocky sections. Total elevation gain is about 500 feet, but the trail starts at 10,000 feet, so the altitude can make it feel more strenuous than the mileage suggests.
The hike will take about 75 minutes each way, and we expect to spend 2-3 hours at the lake. Plan approximately 6 hours total, not including the drive time.
In addition to the four hiking essentials, participants will need: Fly rod, reel, line and leader; Utah fishing license; National Forest parking pass; about a half-dozen attractor flies (the trip leader will suggest specific patterns) and bring your lunch. Polarized sunglasses, a hat, sunscreen and a sun shirt are strongly recommended.
There will be no cell service.
If the weather is questionable on the morning of the hike and fish, please call or text the leader, not email, to see if the event has been cancelled. It will be rescheduled for another day.
