Ride: We will initially ride some old 4 x 4 roads, sections of the old Highway and the Interpretive Trail on the North side of the Provo River for about 5 miles. Once we then cross the Provo River via a bridge, we ride on the south side of the Provo River for another 5 miles. This mostly single-track trail rambles through fragrant forests, with views of the Provo River. This is a scenic and fun ride! There are rocky sections, wet sections and for the finale’ we will wade across the Provo River to return to our vehicles. Bring another pair of shoes if you don’t want your biking shoes to get wet. It is approximately 10 miles with about 600 feet of elevation gain.
Ride Background: I started riding the Provo River Overlook trail out and back in late fall of 2016. Then, in the summer of 2017, I found the Soapstone Pond trail across the river. It was an old abandoned road turned into a horse trail and was very overgrown. I would take bear spray since I almost never saw anyone except for an occasional horse rider or two. Thinking that there has to be a way to make this ride a loop I studied satellite images. It took a few exploratory rides to find the old crossing by the campground. During spring runoff the Provo is not crossable. My first loop and river crossing was on August 20 of 2017. Since then I have taken several groups of riders on the adventure and made the loop at least 38 times. Enjoy the ride, I sure do…Don
