Hikes Planned for August and September

pictures/249.jpg
Hike Coordination

August Hikes are coordinated by Sharon Kellner (skellner@genstoneresorts.com)

September Hikes are coordinated by Jay Frankenfield (jfrank@mindspring.com)

Strenuous Hikes are coordinated by David Anderson (danderson@dcalaw.org)

What David Anderson says about preparing for these hikes:
"Please be very certain that a strenuous hike is a good match for your abilities and expectations. You should be in excellent physical condition and possess keen hiking skills and the ability to keep up with the group throughout the hike. We try to maintain a brisk pace throughout and to finish together so that we can go out afterward for a meal and drinks. Because of the nature of strenuous hikes, scrambling, exposure, route finding and other challenges are frequently present. The pace during both ascent and descent is faster, with greater distance, elevation gain and fewer rest breaks than during moderate hikes. Please check with the hike leader if you are not certain that your abilities and interests are compatible with those of the group."

Everyone is encouraged to lead a hike. Our programs only work if members pitch in. Please contact the appropriate coordinator (listed above) or Jon Scarlet (Summer Activities Director) if you can lead a hike. We especially need people to lead moderate weekday hikes and easy-to-moderate hikes on weekends

Considering Others
When carpools are for significant distances please chip in for the drivers' expenses

Sunday, August 15 Anke Meek will lead a moderate hike up Bald Mountain in the Uintas. Meet at Wasatch Bagels at 8:30am. We can carpool there. The signed Bald Mtn Trailhead is at mile marker 29.1 on Hwy 150/Mirror Lake Hwy, from Kamas ($3/day fee; please bring pass if you have one). This hike will take about 3 hours round trip with a 1250' elevation gain over the 2 miles hike distance. The trail follows switchbacks up, then the ridgeline across. Please prepare yourself with the 6 Hiking Essentials. Bug repellent is highly recommended. Always think of rain when in the Uintas. Anke Meek, your hike leader, may be contacted at 435-901-1084.

Sunday August 15 Pam Carlquist will lead a strenuous hike on the Notch Mountain Trail hike in the Uinta Mountains. This is a strenuous hike because of the distance (ten miles) and pace. The elevation gain will not be significant (less than 2,000 feet). We start at the Bald Mountain Trailhead and finish at the Trial Lake Trailhead. The hike will pass several lakes before lunch at Meadow Lake. The return will pass the Notch and other beautiful lakes, which we may also visit. Meet at Wasatch Bagels at 8:30 a.m., then car pool to the trailhead; on the way one car will be left at Trial Lake. Bring plenty of water, snacks and lunch. With a brisk pace the hiking time will be five to six hours. Anticipate the possibility of showers and bugs. Dogs are invited to participate. For more information contact leader Pam,435.649.9403 (home) or 435.513.0597 (cell). Review the Six Hiking Essentials.

Saturday, August 21 Miki Laws will a moderate hike with good hill climbs to Jupiter Peak: Meet at Wasatch Bagels at 9:00am, carpool to the top of Little Guardsman Pass. The hike takes about 3 hours round trip. It is mostly uphill, with gorgeous views, and has one short section that is steep, so hiking poles are a good idea. Make sure to bring water, a snack, and a windbreaker, just in case the ridge is windy. This is a blue hike, and we climb around 1,000 feet, on mostly very good trail. Leisurely lunch somewhere afterwards. Dogs are welcome on this hike, but please be particularly attentive to your dog where hikers will be dealing with loose footing. As always, please ensure your safety and enjoyment with the 6 Hiking Essentials. Call the hike leader, Miki Laws, at 801-494-7815 with any questions.

Wednesday August 25 Beano Solomon with lead a unique three-club hike on the Shingle Creek Trail in the Uintas. Beano has used her special talents and has invited hikers from the Newcomers Club, the Wasatch Mountain Club and our club. While this in not an official PCMC-only hike, it should be a great event for meeting folks from the other clubs. This will be a moderate hike. It goes out and back on a woodsy gentle trail along a river. Total distance is about four miles. Bring a snack and your National Park Pass. Since it’s the Unitas, some rain gear and bug spray may be a good to carry. Review the Six Hiking Essentials. Meet at Wasatch Bagles in time to leave there at 9:15. Beano can be reached at 435 940 0699.

Sunday, August 29 Annemarie Ferrari will lead a moderate hike on Rob's Trail. We will meet in the outer parking lot of Smith's at Kimball Junction, 9:00am. This hike will be an out-and-back, so we will go as far as the overall group would like, probably about 1 ˝ hours out. Dogs are very welcome. Please don't forget your Hiking Essentials. Your hike leader will be Annemarie Ferrari, 801-268-7119.

Saturday, September 4, Bub Carlson (home 435 658 4728) will lead an intermediate hike in Toll Canyon. We expect to reach the saddle overlooking Lambs Canyon so the hike will be about 1,600 vertical feet and about 3 hours. Meet at PC Bagels in Jeremy Ranch at 9:00 to avoid the heat and bring a snack to eat at the turnaround point. And since Bub is leading the hike - DOGS and WOLVES are welcome! Don't forget the six hiking essentials.

Monday, September 6 (Labor Day), Jon Scarlet (Home 435-658-0390, cell 508-450-1647) will lead an intermediate hike in Lambs Canyon. Meet at PC Bagels in Jeremy Ranch at 9:00 to avoid the heat. The hike will be approximately 1,500 feet and take 2.5-3 hours. Bring a snack to eat at the turnaround point, and don't forget the six hiking essentials. Sorry, no dogs in Salt Lake County watershed.

Sunday, September 12 Anke Meek will lead an easier-intermediate hike to Notch Lake. Meet at Wasatch Bagel at 8:30 am. We will carpool to Bald Mountain in the Uintas. The Trailhead starts below Bald Mountain the hike is flat and takes 3 to 4 hours round trip. Bing lunch or snack so we can eat at Notch Lake. There is a $6 fee for recreation or if you have a pass bring you pass. Dogs are welcome. Call hike leader with questions: Anke 435-901-1084.

Sunday, September 19 Annemarie Ferrari (home 801-466-1972) will lead a longer-intermediate hike in Mill Creek Canyon. This is a new hike for the club and should provide little "adventure." It is a loop hike starting with the Elbow Fork Trail at Terraces trailhead, going up to Elbow Fork, crossing the road, and returning on the Pipeline Trail. The hike has about 1,800 vertical feet and will take about 4 hours. Meet at PC Bagels in Jeremy Ranch at 9:00 or at REI in Salt Lake City at 9:30. Bring a lunch to eat at the turnaround point. Dogs are welcome. Don't forget the six hiking essentials.

Sunday, September 26, Jay Frankenfield (home office 801-485-0375, cell435-901-2744) will lead an intermediate hike up Spiro, across Thaynes Canyon and down Iron Mountain. We've scheduled beautiful fall colors, so it should be gorgeous. Meet at Wasatch Bagels at 9:00 AM to carpool and stage cars. The hike is about 1,400 vertical feet and will last about 3.5 hours. Bring a snack to eat overlooking Thaynes Canyon, and don't forget the six hiking essentials. Dogs are welcome.
